Here's an idea for gigabit Internet in Austin!
Virtualized 3D Rendering
I maintain an open source project called VirtualGL which virtualizes OpenGL 3D rendering and allows games, scientific/medical visualization applications, and design applications to be rendered on a back-room server and delivered as an interactive video stream in real time to a thin client device. The idea is that tablets, laptops, and even PDAs which have limited 3D acceleration could interact with 3D data that normally wouldn’t fit (or wouldn’t perform well) on such devices.
On a normal broadband network, we can stream a 1280 x 1024 screen at 8 frames/second with very lossy image quality. BigGig would allow us to stream a 1920 x 1200 screen at 25+ frames/second using perceptually lossless image quality.
